A New Year – A New Beginning

2007 was a bad year for Caledonian Seaplanes. As we all know, the weather was not kind for those of us who enjoy flying seaplanes and we lost a number of days because of this.

Our new Aviat Husky was at Dundee Airport awaiting some engineering work when it was blown over in the storms on the 9th January. Unfortunately it has been quite severely damaged and is now awaiting assessment regarding her future. At the moment, the possibility is that she may have to go back to the manufacturers where the specialist jigs would be used to straighten out the damaged parts.

We also had problems to with our faithful Piper Cub – ‘Buttercup’. She required a new piston and rings and, by the time it arrived and was fitted, seven weeks had elapsed and the weather had taken a turn for the worse. This meant that we were unable to fly her from Loch Earn to Fife Airport at Glenrothes where she normally spends the winter in a hangar.

More trouble was to come! While at her moorings, severe storms brought heavy rain and wind which caused the water level to rise at Loch Earn and this gave us severe trouble trying to keep the old lady safe. Some damage was done before we were able to get her out of the Loch and on to her trailer where she is now safe. Engineers have just visited her and declared that repairs should not be too difficult and we will be ready for the season starting in April.

As we have said – a new year – a new beginning. We look forward to 2008 with Buttercup and we will keep everyone posted regarding the Husky.

A Very Happy 2008 to you all.
